| Anndaluz | Mar 20, 2:22pm | | 1. I've got the noscript addon which I've always had set to block google analytics but it doesn't seem watertight at preventing a website from seeing your IP address or which site you arrived at their's from. I know of 2 sites which will display your IP and one of these will also display where you last visited. |

| isabeats | Mar 20, 3:47pm | The only thing I had going for me was SpyBot Search + Destroy, but today I added AdBlock with FiltersetG and NoScript. I am 95% lost (as I usually am with all this computer technical stuff), but, thanks to MagicDot, I figured out how to add Google.Analytics to the banned list and am happy to see it works!
Is there anything else extra-helpful to add to the banned list? |

You are right, its not %100, but for the most part, most of these spam sites are thrown together over nite and don't display must sophistication. ..they're the ones to really worry about. ..I would like to know the sites you are having problems w/ so I can see for myself. |
|
|
| Anndaluz | Mar 20, 8:43pm | 1&5, Re my previous post: the sites in question are danasoft.com and iptect.com. Iptect.com displays how you got to their site as well as IP, OS and browser information.
Manually editing system 32 is something I find intimidating, so I'll look at an automated solution and try adding Adblock.
4. What's FiltersetG?
Anyone know if Magicdot's idea of editing the host file also blocks packet sniffing and logfile analysis? No, as yet I don't know anything about these technologies, I've just been surfing for info. |

| magicdot | Mar 20, 10:33pm | #6. Check out PeerGuardian 2. Some say its worthless, but when I look at my log and see a bunch of adservers blocked, government agencies blocked, and what not, I can't see how it does any harm. Oh. ..and if you want to see what all is going on in your connections, check out Wireshark.
..the only way I know of to block an IP is to use a proxy. There is something I've been meaning to install and check out and its called the TorNetwork [link]. Its sorta like a proxy, but its not. ;)
Here's a paper on Tor and what it offers. I am fucking w/ this right now. I shall report back on its results.
I went to the iptect.com and, yes, it does show what OS you're using and the refering site you came from. But. It had no idea how many sites I've visited, no matter how many I went thru. So, perhaps they're using google-analytics, which you can block. That is solved.
I don't claim to be any expert on this. I just read and read, fuck my system up, read some more, and then figure things out. I have yet to find anything that claims to block it all. The TorNetwork I referred to earlier might just do that.
And FiltersetG [link] is a list that runs with AdBlock w/ a bunch of regularly updated IPs to block.
I've also been running a program I just recently found called Haute Secure. ..its another group managed list. ..so far everything I run seems to work together. ..sometimes they all lite up at once saying they found the same thing.
[edit]: ..right out of the box, tor has hidden my IP. ..it does, however, make browsing pretty slow. ..of course. ..according to iptest.com, I am now browsing from the Red Socks' stadium. ..so. ;) ..that answers that question. ..if I read things correctly, the more people use this, the faster it will be.
[edit]: ..it really is quite slow. ..I don't know as tho I can just surf using something like this..
[edit]: ..here's a FF addon [link] to kill the info sent from referring [wiki] sites.
[edit.. ..again]: ..its late, or early, depending on how you look at it. ..perhaps after a few hours of sleep, I'll re-write all this w/ lots of links and info so everyone can understand me better. ..I've just been editing this as I go along.
I just want everyone to realize that the war against spam starts at home. Complaining won't get you anywhere. You have to kick them where it hurts: in the pocketbook. |

| isabeats | Mar 22, 5:59am | | Would the more knowledgeable people here tell me if it's good to use AdBlock to ban "sitemeters"- I just banned one when it came up at that spam site Gladsdotter just posted about. It seems like it would be keeping track of hits, etc., with a name like that. So I banned it without REALLY knowing for sure. Thanks. And the same for "stat counters"- should I ban those too, when they show up at a spammy site? |
|
|
| magicdot | Mar 22, 12:08pm | #8 sure. ..as long as you're actually banning the code behind it and not just a graphical representation.
When a page loads and you have adblock running, you can hit the octagon w/ ABP in it and it will open a window across the bottom 1/3rd of your screen. This will show you all the blockable items on that page.
Opening it right on this page brings up a couple javascript bits. ..these are the actual working parts of the page. ..these are also where their stat counters and such get their info. ..the way I'm learning is, when I hit a page where there seem to be a lot of "free space" on the page, I pretty much know that there are things being blocked. ..so I open the list and check out what's being blocked from the page. ..some stand right out. ..others, not so much. ..google is a fascinating tool. ..I have yet to plug even the strangest looking code or string of characters and have it result w/ no hits.
I don't think there's a way to hide everything w/o running something like Tor, w/ cookies, java scripting, whatever, all turned off. You basically just wanna block the ads. ..it still hurts them. ..all the marketing will never go away from the internet. ..in a way, its a good thing. ..it keeps the cost of your connection down in the long run. I am surprised, however, that such a group of people are finding what I'm saying as something new. Just running the basics is enough to make some marketers scared -- if more did the same, they'd be terrified. ..so spread the word about AdBlock and such. |

| isabeats | Mar 22, 12:32pm | 9- Thanks. I figured that if these site-meters and stat-counters are coming up a lot (as often as the Google-analytics) I might as well block them. I've been using that ABP octagon to study what is actually going on with sites. That 1/3 page is where I've blocked what I blocked. At this point it makes little sense, but I am beginning to put a few little pieces together as I persevere. I compare cool sites with the spammy sites, just to see what is happening with ABP. Basically, I'm checking EVERY page (when it's no bother), just to compare.
A little later: I've just spent half an hour using the stumble button and checking out each site by clicking on that ABP octagon. One site had about 20 Xs, so I checked the page and found tons of it blank, where the ads would be. Then I found another site like that. Excellent! And I see how I can add anything from the list that shows to the block list. Although ABP seems to do all that well enough on its own. I am very glad I have this. And once I'm a little more familiar with it, I would be happy to help spread the word. |
